Heavy Duty Towing with 48k lbs of Frac Sand

Challenge of Heavy Duty Towing with Auto Traffic and Frac Sand

Heavy duty towing was required in San Antonio last week with a semi truck hauling tons of frac sand.  While one grain of sand is nearly as light as dust, 48,000 pounds of sand can strain even the sturdiest roadside, towing equipment.  Mission Wrecker was called when a trailer neck gave way while loaded with 48,000 pounds of frac sand. The tons of frac sand recovery was made more complex by constant traffic on the two-lane road. This became a difficult heavy duty towing job that required careful methodical planning and execution.

So, when Mission Wrecker arrived on the scene we took a methodical approach.  We immediately disconnected the truck from the trailer. We then fed and secured the broken neck of the trailer to get close enough to use the safety hook.  With the wrecker, we then lifted the 48k lbs of sand in boxes, one at a time onto a new trailer. Once the load up was finished, we decked the broken trailer onto a flatbed and drove it away

Also, as we want to thump our own chests a little, a number of other towing companies declined to take on the heavy duty tow and recovery. It was just too much for them to handle, so they declined.

The real trick was working with local authorities as they wanted to block off the two-lane road completely.  They were worried that someone might get hurt. However, one of our heavy duty towing team members showed them how things were under control and they allowed us to opened up a lane for traffic to pass by.  We were happy to have helped. Thanks to the whole team at Mission Wrecker for a job well done.

Detail Heavy Towing of 48,000 Pounds of Sand

A heavy towing team was needed when 48,000 pounds of sand sitting atop.  The mission wrecker heavy towing team assessed the situation. Upon arrival, the heavy towing team disconnected the truck from the trailer. They then lifted and secured the broken neck of the trailer to get close enough to safely hook up and move the trailer backwards to a driveway after caging the breaks on the trailer. The heavy towing team then used the Century 9055 xp850 to lift the 24k lbs sand boxes. First, the heavy towing team lifted one box and set it down. Then the heavy towing team lifted a second box and set it down. This went on and on for all the boxes. The heavy towing team was very careful with each box. First, the boxes were very heavy and needed to be handled with care. Second, the boxes holding the sand needed to be prevented from being damaged. This job was performed on a small 2 lane road that had a high influx of truck traffic due to their being 2 frac sand plants on this stretch of road.  When the heavy towing supervisor arrived on the scene he noticed that local sheriff deputies had closed off all traffic and a traffic jam was occurring. The heavy towing supervisor on scene reassured the deputies that they could do this safely if they opened up one lane of travel and they directed traffic to get traffic flowing smoothly.
